MY MADONNA MOMENT
Showing off your bra at our age takes courage... and a huge scoop of confidence. Can your 6ixties really be that swinging?
Every woman of my vintage will remember Madonna strutting her stuff in see-through lace & bra outfits in the early 1980s. Bras have defined her look from Like A Virgin to her iconic 1990 Jean-Paul Gaultier satin cone bra. My Madonna Moment started when I discovered the ideal bra and began fantasizing about ways to show it off.
(By the way, thanks to Lingerie company Wacoal for sexy and colourful full-figured women options. Wacoal was founded in Japan in 1949 and prides itself on fitting brassieres with precision. In fact, Wacoal bras are still made almost entirely by hand using Japanese sewing technology.)
ANYWAY... when I think "Madonna", I think "bra" and this outfit begins with my mauve blue Wacoal Evocative Edge underwire bra. This piece is so sexy and sumptuous that you really want to show it off. So, the only thing between my Wacoal and the world is a Zara ecru lace button shirt that is boldly see-through. Hey, Ms Ciccone, look at my bra!
But why not add another texture? The faux leather leggings are a new favourite that show off my legs in the best way. They have a brushed fleece lining to make them super comfortable. Believe it or not, they can even be thrown into the washing machine!
A white blazer helps to blur the lines between bra and shirt. And then, for the dramatic movie star moment, I'm draping a neutral wool coat over my shoulders. Simple black boots elongate the leg and finish the look.
Recently, I wore this immaculate collection to lunch at a fancy restaurant. As I walked to our table, treating the dining room as my personal runway, a group of women nearby called me over.
"Fabulous!" the other diners cried out. Of course, they were the same vintage as me with fashion sense likely forged by that same virgin-simulating performer.
