A FUNKY FALL SUIT

Fall fashion flash — drawing attention to the waist gives a flattering hourglass shape.

In your twenties you can get away with a simple T-shirt and a pair of pants. But for those of us on the other side of fifty, adding the just-right third piece really finishes an outfit and makes us look more polished. Although I like jean jackets, lately I've been finding them a bit too... common. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for a jacket with design and details to elevate my look.

Adding this Zara jacket transforms my pants and T-shirt into a casual, funky fall suit that can take me from the office, out shopping, and to dinner in style. Here, I’m pairing a Zara Chanel-inspired jacket with exaggerated shoulder pads with cropped paperbag pants from Club Monaco. I just love how the shoulder pads draw the eye upward and give me the appearance of being taller than I am.

What I really admire about these pants are the details the adjustable tie gives them shape, they’re a linen blend so they don’t easily crease; they’re fully lined and they’re finished with sewn-down pleats and a double hook-and-bar closure. I know I’ll be wearing these classic trousers for seasons to come.

The black T-shirt, also from Club Monaco, is a perfect building block for many outfits. For me, the V-neck is always my first choice in a neckline. The V neckline is slimming and gives space between the face and the décolletage.

I finished the outfit with a pair of neutral wedge sandals. For me, even a small wedge gives me height and the open toe sandal shows off those polished toes!

FINAL DETAILS

  • Drawing attention to the waist yields a flattering hour glass shape.

  • A cropped jacket and high-waist pants makes your legs appear longer.

  • Striped pants add texture to an outfit.

  • Choose colours that flatter you. For me, having khaki green next to my skin is a good thing.
